THY LIFE FOR A PREY

“But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid. For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in Me, saith the Lord.” (Jer. 39:17-18)

Israel was faced with going into captivity, it was of the Lord, He had purposed to bring judgment upon the city because of the disobedience and sin. Discipline, correction must be made! Thus, the real issue involved was, would they submit under the mighty hand of God, or would they rebel some more, and persist in trusting in their own stubborn will and way. Going into a time of captivity, and willingly submitting to the God who ordained it, and because of this act of obedience He promised to give them their life as a prey, they would live through it all. This serves as a vivid example and promise for us today, for “all these things happened unto them for ensamples; and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.” (I Cor. 10:11).

In the processing’s of God, bringing death to the carnal mind, an end to our own selfhood’s rebellion and waywardness, the hand of God often brings us into situations and circumstances which circumvent us, hem us in, become a form of captivity to us. We can yield to His hand, “submit yourselves therefore to God…draw nigh to God…humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.” (James 4:7-10).

Praise God, the promise remains, in the midst of all the evil, the shakings, the distresses, “Thy life will I give unto thee for a prey.” And what is the life which He gives? It is a triumphant, victorious life, rising out of the midst of chaos, to blossom forth in praise and worship to Him who doeth all things well.

Though others about thee shall stumble and fall,
Ten thousand beside thee enwrapped in death’s pall,
Yet verily He promised thy life He would give –
When all else is fading, triumphant to live.
