So You Think You Can Dance

Let’s begin by looking at the word “Guidance.”  Its meanings are, “advice, lead, conduct, pilot, escort, direct, steer, shepherd.”  Now look at the section of the word, "dance" at the end.  As a former ballroom dancer, I can reflect upon, and compare, how having God in control, leading every move, is just like dancing.

When two people try to lead the dance doesn't flow with the music, and, every step and movement is out of sync, and I have no doubts that they are probably stepping on each other’s toes in the process.  I’ve seen dancers literally fly, fall, and sometimes even get hurt when both parties are trying to lead.  I’ve fallen a few times myself either by my partner not leading correctly or me anticipating the next move instead of knowing what it will be.  One person must let the other qualified person lead, then and only then will both dancers begin to dance in unison with the music.  The leader, gives gentle direction (to turn something toward its appointed or intended mark or goal), by pressing lightly on the back to move forward, gently pushing the arm back to move backwards, or on the shoulder, usually to direct away from another couple dancing, or turning the wrist to the left or the right.  Some steps, or moves, require the leader putting the hands in a certain position as a sign to prepare the follower for the next move.  West Coast Swing, the hardest and yet most creative if the swing dances, requires constant eye contact to remain focused.  Once focus it lost, mistakes follow.  Pair dancing is two individual people becoming one body, moving beautifully and in harmony with the music. Dancing takes surrender, willingness, and attentiveness from one person, and the gentle guidance and knowledge from the other.

Let’s go back to the word “Guidance.” Look at the letter, "G," think of God, followed by "U,"  or “You” and "I."  I see it as, “God, You, (and) I dance.”  As we surrender to God and became willing to trust His more then “qualified” guidance in our lives, then and only then can we move in oneness, instead of stumbling over each other's feet and stepping on each other's toes.

Let God lead; and you follow  ~

We can also dance in a group, but there must be someone in control or there would be absolute chaos.  The one in control is the “choreographer,” the one who has created and arranged each individual movement, then directs, transforming each individual and “becoming one body, moving beautifully and in harmony with the music;”  The music that God has created (called into being); is perfect unity.

May you totally abide in the Lord as He totally abides in you.  As you dance with Christ Jesus, trust our Lord to shepherd you through each day, and through each season of your life.

God, You, I Dance
