You said that you presently feel as if the fire is a consuming one to you. There are so many things in your (what can be done?) letter that need to be addressed that I would ask God to help me walk gently in my answer.
It seems that God is taking you on a trip out of "religion" and into a walk into and with Him. The trip out of religion is lined with flames of God's eternal fire. All religion is based on eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. In short, (law). Do's and don'ts, according to man and his concepts. I have one and only one voice to follow and that is the Voice of my Saviour, The Living Word who came into the Lamb, Jesus and became the way into fellowship with God.
Since God is a consuming fire and that true Life that is being resurrected within you and dragging you closer to God, you must let go of the person that you used to relate to as being you. It is no longer I who live, but Christ (the anointing of what God has said and is saying and will say) becomes a person who is a living being within that "shell" you think of as you. Gal.2:20 That is what is being burned away and revealed to you for what it is. Yes, it hurts because of your close ties with the Husks that has stolen your true identity which is that Spirit Life or sperm that is within you and is Now being fed so it can start growing up and dominate the shell. As the shell lets this earth rot it you are more able to live in that true life that you were created for and hear that still small voice within your true heart where God is Lord. You must get to know His true voice, and whether it comes from a true, loving, caring, working and dragging you always into fellowship with Him. It is Christ's Faith that is working within you, not your former supposed life.
You mentioned that you understood that "I didn't think there was eternal fire after this life." Because of the many terms we use that have been ingrained in our normal or canal way of talking we tend not to think as God thinks. This carnal walk is a walk of death on into death. The fire is only to burn that which is of the death realm. Life is what is within that is Spirit and Eternal and will not die. I do think that there is God's Fire in the next dimension for the Soul of man to be purged, purified, delivered, set free from the conditioning and fears that separate us even after the loss of our present body's. This fire won't go on a minute longer or a bit hotter than God's plan dictates to do His will, which is for Every knee to bow and Every tongue to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the Glory of God your Father.
Learn the Love of God for you as a personal Father to you and you won't have to have that guilty feeling of your past. God has cast your past away. When you have guilty feelings it is because you are not seeing what and who you are and are not seeing what God did when He placed You in Jesus Christ at the time of the Cross experience. All that is not of God or His timing will be purified and changed. Get to know the fire and become a part of it. Fire doesn't hurt fire.
I may be trying to cover too much at once. Ponder on this and let me know where I need to be more clear or where you need scripture to reassure you.
